What to tell your insurer, what year to list, and which companies DM Vans owners use.
Insuring a DM Van is straightforward, but there’s one critical detail that can make a significant difference in your rate: how you describe the vehicle to your insurer. Get this right and you’ll likely pay less. Get it wrong and you could be overpaying or even creating coverage gaps.
The Most Important Thing: How to Describe Your Van
When you call an insurance company, describe your vehicle as:
| “[Year] DM Van [LV3/LV5/LV7], RVIA-certified Class B RV” |
For example: “2026 DM Van LV7, RVIA-inspected Class B RV.”
Do NOT say “Ram ProMaster conversion” or “converted cargo van.” This distinction matters because insurers have specific, typically more favorable rate categories for RVIA-inspected Class B RVs. A “custom conversion” is a different category entirely. It’s harder to categorize, harder to value, and often more expensive to insure. That means the insurance company may give you a harder time on these.
Which Year to List: Build Year, Not Chassis Year
DM Vans sources Ram ProMaster chassis in bulk. The chassis may have been manufactured by Ram in an earlier year, but for all official purposes — titling, registration, insurance, warranty, and resale value — your van is a 2025 or 2026 DM Van (the DM build year).
Always use the DM build year when setting up insurance. Some insurers may initially try to use the Ram chassis year…so correct them. The build year is what appears on your title and is the basis for your van’s NADA book value.
What Coverage Do You Need?
At minimum, you need:
• Collision coverage
• Comprehensive coverage
• Theft protection
Beyond that, coverage is personal preference based on your situation. Some owners add roadside assistance, full-timer’s coverage (if living in the van full-time), or personal belongings coverage. Your insurer can walk you through options.
You’ll need active insurance before your van can leave the DM Vans lot, whether you’re picking up in person or receiving a delivery. Make sure your insurance start date aligns with your pickup or delivery date.
Popular Insurance Companies Among DM Vans Owners
Roamly
Roamly specializes in camper van and RV insurance and is one of the most popular choices among DM Vans owners. They understand RVIA-inspected builds and can categorize and value the van correctly from the start. This is one of the easiest companies to insure your DM Van.
Progressive
Progressive is another common choice with competitive rates for Class B RVs. As a major national insurer, they’re widely available and easy to work with.
These aren’t the only options, though, any insurer that covers Class B RVs can insure a DM Van. Shop around for the best rate, and make sure you describe the vehicle correctly when getting quotes.
Why RVIA Inspection Helps With Insurance
Meeting RVIA standards makes the insurance process smoother and typically cheaper for three reasons:
• Recognized vehicle class — Insurers know exactly what a certified Class B RV is and how to value it.
• Documented value — NADA book value means the van’s worth is established, not guesswork.
• Construction standards — RVIA requires specific safety and construction standards, which insurers view favorably.
Compare this to insuring a custom van conversion, where the insurer may not know how to categorize it, can’t look up a standardized value, and has no assurance about build standards. That uncertainty typically translates to higher premiums or coverage complications.
When to Set Up Insurance
Start shopping for insurance quotes a few weeks before your expected delivery date. You’ll need a binder or proof of coverage before the van can leave the lot. Having your quote ready to activate makes the pickup or delivery process smooth.
Your sales ambassador or the customer experience team can provide the vehicle details (VIN, year, model) you’ll need for the insurance application.
