LV3 vs. LV5 vs. LV7: Which DM Vans model Is Right for You?

Three sizes. Same build quality. Here’s how to choose the DM Vans model that’s right for you.

Choosing your van size is the single biggest decision in the DM Vans buying process. Every DM Vans model shares the same build quality, kitchen layout, front cab, insulation, and core features. The difference is length, and that length affects your living space, bed configuration, fuel economy, and how you’ll use the van day to day.

Here’s a straightforward comparison to help you decide.

The Three DM Vans Models at a Glance

The LV3, LV5, and LV7 are all built on the Ram ProMaster platform, but each offers a different experience on the road and inside. The LV3 is the most nimble — easiest to park, best on fuel, and well-suited for solo travelers who spend more time exploring than living in the van. The LV5 splits the difference, offering flexible bed configurations and noticeably more living space while still fitting comfortably in a standard parking spot. The LV7 is the most livable of the three, with the most interior space, the longest sleeping surface, and serious gear storage underneath.

If driving ease is your priority, choose the LV3. If you want flexibility without committing to a large vehicle, the LV5 is the sweet spot. If you’re living in it full-time or traveling as a couple, the LV7 is worth every inch. Let’s break it down further.

LV3: 18 Feet

The LV3 is the smallest DM Van and the easiest to park and navigate in tight spaces. It’s ideal for solo travelers, weekenders, or anyone who prioritizes driving ease and fuel economy over interior living space. The short queen bed runs sideways across the van (comfortable for people approximately 5’10”–5’11” and under, as you have walls at both head and feet).

• 136-inch wheelbase

• Approximately 18–19 mpg

• Bed runs east-west (sideways), short queen (60” x 72”)

• The most compact and maneuverable option

LV5: 19.6 Feet

• 159-inch wheelbase

• Approximately 16–17 mpg

• Bed can run east-west (short queen, short king) or north-south (full-size)

• About the length of a standard pickup truck

The LV5 is the middle ground. It gives you more living space than the LV3 and offers the most bed configuration flexibility. You can choose a short queen or short king running sideways, or a full-size bed running front to back. The north-south option provides more sleeping length, and the bump-outs in the rear door windows add 4–6 inches of extra space. At 19.6 feet, it’s about the same length as a full-size pickup truck, so it fits into everyday driving and parking without a second thought.

LV7: 21 Feet

• 159-inch extended wheelbase

• Approximately 16–17 mpg

• Full-size bed runs north-south with storage cabinet alongside (or short king without cabinet)

• The most interior living space

The LV7 is the flagship and the strong recommendation for anyone considering full-time van life or traveling as a couple. It shares the same 159-inch wheelbase as the LV5, so it drives almost identically. The extra length hangs off the back past the rear wheels. You barely notice the difference behind the wheel, but inside, it’s a meaningfully more livable space.

The full-size bed runs front to back with a storage cabinet alongside. You can remove the cabinet for a wider short king sleeping surface. The GEARage under the bed platform has 34 inches of clearance, which is enough to fit mountain bikes without removing wheels.

The LV5 vs. LV7 Question

This is the most common comparison we hear. Here’s the honest answer: the LV5 and LV7 share the same wheelbase and drive almost identically. The extra length on the LV7 is barely noticeable while driving or parking. But inside, that additional space makes a significant difference in how the van feels to live in. There’s more room to move, more storage, and a more comfortable bed configuration.

Multiple full-time DM Vans owners confirm that the upgrade to the LV7 is well worth it. If you’re on the fence, size up.

Who Should Buy Which of the dm vans models?

Choose the LV3 if you’re:

• A solo traveler or weekender

• Prioritizing fuel economy and compact size

• Using the van primarily for road trips, not full-time living

• Parking in tighter urban environments regularly

Choose the LV5 if you’re:

• Looking for a balance between space and maneuverability

• Wanting bed configuration flexibility

• Part-time van life (extended trips but not full-time)

• A couple who wants options but doesn’t need maximum space

Choose the LV7 if you’re:

• Planning to live full-time in your van

• Traveling as a couple

• Wanting maximum living space and storage

• Working remotely from the van

Will It Fit in My Garage?

One of the biggest concerns about the van is where it will fit when you’re not using it. Measure your garage and compare:

• LV3: 18 feet long

• LV5: 19.6 feet long

• LV7: 21 feet long

• All models: approximately 9.5 feet tall with vents closed

The van will NOT fit in standard parking garages. If you have a residential garage, measure both length and height before deciding.

Fuel Economy

The LV3’s smaller size gives it a fuel economy edge at 18–19 mpg. The LV5 and LV7 both get approximately 16–17 mpg. The extra length on the LV7 doesn’t meaningfully impact fuel consumption since they share the same drivetrain and wheelbase. All models run on regular gasoline.
