The single biggest differentiator between DM Vans and custom van conversions comes down to one thing: RVIA Certification.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
If you’re shopping for a camper van, you’ll come across the term “RVIA certified” and you should understand why it matters. It’s not just a sticker on the van…it fundamentally changes how you finance, insure, service, and eventually resell your vehicle.
DM Vans is a final-stage manufacturer and Class B RV dealership certified by the RV Industry Association (RVIA). Here’s what that means for you.
Your Title Says “DM Van,” Not “Ram ProMaster”
When you buy a DM Van, the title reflects the full vehicle. It’s the chassis plus the entire conversion build. The documented value includes everything: the kitchen, electrical system, insulation, bed platform, cabinetry, and all installed systems. This matters because when it comes time to finance, insure, or sell the van, the value of the entire vehicle is recognized, not just the chassis.
With a non-certified custom conversion, the title typically just says “Ram ProMaster” (or whatever the base chassis is). The $40,000–60,000+ you spent on the build isn’t reflected in the title, the documented value, or the resale market.
RV Financing: 20-Year Terms Instead of 5–7
Because a DM Van is a certified Class B RV, banks offer RV loans with terms up to 20 years and no early payoff penalties. This dramatically lowers your monthly payment compared to a standard vehicle loan (5–7 year terms).
Most banks simply won’t finance a non-RVIA-certified van conversion as an RV. If you buy from a non-certified builder, you’re typically stuck with a vehicle loan at higher monthly payments regardless of how much you spent on the build.
Better Insurance Rates
Insurers recognize RVIA-certified Class B RVs as a specific vehicle category with established safety and construction standards. This typically means lower premiums than insuring a custom conversion that insurers don’t know how to categorize.
When calling insurers, this distinction matters: say your vehicle is a “DM Van [LV3/LV5/LV7], RVIA-certified Class B RV” — NOT a “Ram ProMaster conversion.” The way you describe it directly affects your quoted rate.
Documented Resale Value
RVIA-certified vehicles have NADA book value, which is the same valuation system used for cars, trucks, and RVs across the industry. This means when you sell your DM Van, there’s a recognized, standardized value that buyers, lenders, and insurers can reference.
Custom conversions have no standardized value. When you try to sell one, there’s no book value to anchor the price. Buyers can’t easily get financing for it. The build value that cost you tens of thousands of dollars effectively disappears from the transaction.
Nationwide Service at Any RV Dealer
RVIA certification means any RV service center in the country can work on your van. If something in the build needs attention while you’re on the road in Florida, North Carolina, or Oregon, you can walk into any RV dealership and they’ll recognize the vehicle and the build standards. That means you don’t have to head back to the one place that is able to work on your van, or be turned away from all the places that aren’t able to with a custom van.
For chassis and engine issues, any Ram dealership handles warranty service. For build-related issues, the DM Vans customer experience team coordinates with local service providers and covers costs during the warranty period. This is a win-win for you as the customer.
Safety and Construction Standards
RVIA certification requires specific construction, electrical, and plumbing standards. Every DM Van is built to these standards. All piping is internal, electrical systems meet code, and the build is inspected. Again, this isn’t just about the sticker, it’s about knowing your van was built to a recognized standard.
How This Compares to Custom Van Conversions
The custom van conversion market has some talented builders. But there are meaningful structural differences:
• Custom builds may take 6+ months. DM Vans builds in 4–5 weeks.
• Most custom builders require you to supply your own van. DM Vans sources all chassis directly from Ram at a bulk dealer discount which is part of the reason we are able to keep our van prices lower than most in the industry.
• Custom builds typically can’t be financed as RVs. DM Vans qualifies for 20-year RV loans.
• RV dealers generally won’t service custom conversions. DM Vans are serviced nationwide.
• Custom conversions have no standardized resale value. DM Vans have NADA book value.
None of this means custom conversions are bad. But RVIA certification provides financial, practical, and long-term value advantages that are hard to replicate outside the certified system.
